The waters off Los Gigantes hold one of Europe's most stable populations of short-finned pilot whales, a species that has established year-round residence in the channel between Tenerife and La Gomera.
Marine biologists attribute this permanence to the abrupt submarine topography where the 600-metre cliffs of Los Gigantes plunge directly into the Atlantic, creating deep-water hunting grounds within a kilometre of shore. The Canary Island archipelago sits at the confluence of cool northern currents and subtropical waters, generating a nutrient-rich upwelling zone that sustains squid, the pilot whales' primary prey. In 2021, these waters were designated a Whale Heritage Site by the World Cetacean Alliance, the first such recognition in Europe and only the third worldwide.

Short-finned pilot whales are social animals, travelling in matriarchal pods of 20 to 50 individuals, and are habituated to the presence of sailboats, often approaching hulls out of curiosity. Bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic spotted dolphins are secondary sightings, typically encountered in transit between Los Gigantes and Masca Bay. The volcanic seabed drops to 1,000 metres within two nautical miles of the cliffs, and the upwelling currents create visible temperature gradients where marine life concentrates. Charter captains rely on these thermal boundaries, local knowledge of pod territories, and real-time communication with other vessels to maximise encounter rates, which exceed 90 per cent on calm-weather days.
